Beach of Dreams

Commissioned by Natural England for the festival This is part of the celebration of the England Coast Path which gives access to all our coastline (you're never more than 70 miles away anywhere in England!). Come and celebrate with us!

Beach of Dreams began in 2021, as a 500-mile walk over 35 days along the East Coast of England, where local communities travelled with 500 naturally-dyed silk pennants, each conveying people’s hopes and dreams for the future. Beach of Dreams will culminate in an epic collective UK and Ireland-wide coastal journey in May 2025.

Beach of Dreams 2025 is an invitation to join a mass participatory walk from 1st May – 1 June 2025 to discover more about our coastlines, ourselves, and our planet, in collaboration with local communities, artists, writers and scientists.  Together, through walking, talking and making, we will consider the question “How can we creatively reimagine our future? And what will we do to look after our communities, our coastal environment and ourselves?”

An unprecedented partnership of arts, cultural, environmental and community organisations across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will bring artists, scientists, and writers together with communities to creatively seek solutions for their local landscape in response to challenges presented by the climate emergency. Hopes and fears, stories and dreams will be gathered mile by mile, shared on digital platforms with a global audience, showcased in stunning visual displays of thousands of locally designed silk pennants made and carried by the public to inspire and catalyse positive change. Beach of Dreams has been created by Kinetika, under the creative leadership of Ali Pretty, in partnership with Creative Lives.
